Extending our Community Connections from Locally to Globally
When Masonville first opened its doors to the community in 2008, the focus was on establishing free programs for youth that were five years old and younger. Now, Masonville Cove offers additional programs that accommodate 5-7 year olds and 8-13 year olds for the children who have outgrown their beloved Science Alive for Kids Under Five program. We also offer programs for family nights that explore natural wonders like owls, habitats, and oceans. Lastly, Masonville Cove hosts community-wide events like open houses, guided nature walks, and craft events during the holidays.
Besides the onsite programs, Masonville Cove educators are involved in our community. They offer programs for 13 area schools focusing on runoff pollution and the Chesapeake Bay. At the start of the school year, we make an effort to be present at “Back to School Night” so we can connect with the students and their families. Throughout the year, Masonville Cove is also present at local fairs and events in the community.
Lastly, Masonville Cove has established a global connection with Kathleen Jean diStefano in Baltimore City's Sister City, Rotterdam, Netherlands. She is a teacher who works with students to help fight runoff pollution issues in the Netherlands. During the fall of 2013 and 2014, Kathleen came and spoke in a professional development about their issues and new techniques she is using with her students to cause positive change.
