Water Conservation and Pollution Prevention
Students in the 3rd grade TOCB program learn about a stormwater outfall. After learning about how litter travels from the street and into the watershed, they then try to identify the different types of trash they see coming out the outfall. We have done this with 1048 students since 2012.
Students in the outreach based SLURRP program, participate in a trash clean up at their school. In 2013, 642 students picked up 162 pounds of trash and 40 pounds of recyclables. In 2014, 566 students clean up 169 pounds of trash and 85 pounds of recyclables. Since September 2015 this year, 608 students have clean up 109 pounds of trash and 120 pounds of recyclables.
In 2014, Masonville Cove participated in its first Stream Clean. Over 19 volunteers assisted picking up 101 pounds of trash and 71 pounds of recyclables. This year's Project Clean Stream will take place on April 11, 2015.
In the fall of 2014, each bathroom was installed with signage about conserving water. Signs are posted in the stalls and near the sink. Besides having informative signs, each group that visits Masonville Cove is given a brief introduction on how to be green in our bathrooms.
Students in the SLURRP program learn about their "schoolshed" by taking a survey of their schoolyard. Students answer questions about how much impervious/previous surfaces they have, they determine how many teachers/students use smart transportation, and they look at erosion on their schoolyard. They then use a GPS to mark the areas that need improvement. This activity was done with all 5th grade students in our SLURRP schools, approximately 500 students per year.
