Waste Reduction
In the great room, there are receptacles for both trash and recyclables. During lunch rules, students learn that they can use the posters to determine which items go in which bins.
Students reuse old water bottles. One way they use them is by making bird feeders out of them. This activity is a part of the Masonville Cove Environmental Education Festival for the 5th grade SLURRP students and over 1000 water bottles have been made into bird feeders in the past three years. This year, educators at Masonville have started using water bottles to make terrariums for the 3rd grade students from Halstead Academy, Girl Scout groups, and 4th grade students from Columbia Academy. Over 80 students from Halstead Academy, Girl Scout groups, and Columbia Academy have participated in making recycled water bottle terrariums.
During the annual Masonville Cove Environmental Education Festival, students learn about trash and composting. They then compost their leftover lunch scraps. This activity has been done at every festival for the past 8 years and will continue at this year's festival. Each year the Masonville Cove Festival has over 500 participants.
